MONTEVIDEO, MN -
Kelly Anderson, 34, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, appeared in court Friday in Montevideo, Minnesota, for a civil mental illness commitment hearing.
Anderson was questioned by South Dakota investigators two weeks ago about the remains of two newborns that were found in a tree line in Deuel County in November. According to a court filing made prior to Friday's civil hearing, Anderson admitted to investigators on August 13 that she was pregnant in 2009 and 2011 and that the remains found in Deuel County were the babies she had birthed.
Anderson does not face criminal charges at this point but she has been held a Willmar, Minnesota, hospital since August 13 because she attempted to commit suicide while South Dakota investigators were questioning her.
Friday's hearing was scheduled to decide if Anderson should continue to be held because of mental illness. The hearing was closed to the public and the media and the Chippewa County Court Administrator said the judge has ordered that the report following the hearing will be kept confidential.
Minnesota and South Dakota prosecutors are still considering charges.
