Headley To Direct Sanford Underground Lab

LEAD, SD -
There's a new director at the Sanford Undergound Laboratory in Lead, and he is confident the facility's progress will continue despite changes in the lab's funding.
It's been a year of transition at the lab, but with Mike Headley stepping into the role of Lab Director, things are changing.
"We can house science here; we can do cutting edge science here, and do it well," Headley said.
But just last December, those experiments were in jeopardy after the National Science Foundation cut the lab's funding. Now the Department of Energy is picking up the tab for the valuable research taking place here.
"We're going to a partner that is well versed in what it takes to operate a large-scale laboratory and large-scale facility," Headley said.
This isn't Headley's first experience at the Sanford Underground Lab. He directed the DUSEL program here for the past three years.
"On the heels of that, I'm transitioning into a role where I'm not only overseeing the facility development, but also overseeing future operations work and current operations work as well," Headley said.
And while most of the work is done thousands of feet underground, Headley says the support and enthusiasm of people surrounding the project are invaluable.
"I run into people all the time in the community who are asking about the project. It's great to have such a strong base of support moving forward," Headley said.
