Have A Plan During Severe Weather Season

April 23, 2014, 7:50 AM by Brittany Larson

Have A Plan During Severe Weather Season

It takes a combination of a couple of things for a tornado to form.

"You want a lot of heat and a lot of moisture, can't have rain without moisture, and that creates instability so then you have this atmosphere that's ready to go," KELOLAND Meteorologist Grant Smith said.

Then you need a cold front or low pressure to move in.

"Low pressure moving in that allows for that very unstable air to rise and as soon as it starts to rise, that moisture in the atmosphere condenses and becomes clouds and you get enough of it going, a lot of vertical motion happening and then you get usually severe weather or some sort of rain," Smith said.

Smith adds that the more unstable the atmosphere is the more chance for a severe storm.

"More high winds that can create your hails and your gusty winds and tornadoes if the set up is just right," Smith said.

That's why having a plan is so important.

"It's absolutely necessary, it's something like insurance you should just probably create your plans and set it aside and that way when you need it you have it and you know where to go and especially if you have family and parents are sometimes out of the house and so your kids know where to go in the event of severe weather or tornado or something," resident of Sioux Falls, Matt McLarty said.

McLarty says he does have a place where his family will meet if a storm occurs.

"Well there's a safe place in our basement in our laundry room that we have designated as the place that we would go but that is as about as far as our plan goes is a that place and we also have animals in the house that we would need to get and so we probably should have a better plan in place," McLarty said.

Along with being prepared, Smith has another piece of advice.

"When there is severe weather happening to not go chasing after it unless you have been properly trained and you know what you're doing," Smith said.
