Halloween is still a couple of days away, but one KELOLAND man already has a few tricks up his sleeve. Those who visit his haunted house just outside of Sioux Falls say it's a real treat.
From bloody veins to fang-filled vampires, this haunted house may look scary, but the owner, who also likes to dress up for Halloween and call himself Grog, is inviting people to stop by and pay a visit, if you dare.
"Halloween is fun. It's fun for kids; it's fun for adults. I like to make them laugh and smile and scream a little," Oscar DeVries said. "I like to scare some of the bigger kids a little more than the little ones, but little ones seem to take it quite well when Grog comes out."
DeVries says he got the haunted house idea years ago when he first moved to the country to try and get kids to stop by for trick or treating.
"Couldn't get any kids. Handed out fliers to advertise and signs out at the road and the display just grew every year, DeVries said.
He's added an inflatable hearse and even a headless horseman.
"I saw the headless horseman chop off somebody's head one night that was kind strange; we buried him out back," DeVries said.
DeVries says he's done the display for so long, neighbors look forward to it every year.
"There'll be some children and parents very disappointed if I quit doing it," DeVries said.
He admits it's a lot of work putting up the display, but adds it's worth the time and effort, plus playing Grog is his treat every Halloween even if you think he's a little scary.
"You know I often tell people if you think it's strange on the outside, you should be in my head," DeVries said.
If you'd like to stop by DeVries' address is 48026 Oak Trail in southeast Sioux Falls near Frankman Motors off of Highway 11.
