Harrisburg Gov't Gets Makeover Inside & Out

November 23, 2012, 9:55 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Harrisburg Gov't Gets Makeover Inside & Out
HARRISBURG, SD -

An old building on the main street in Harrisburg will be getting a makeover while the growing town makes changes in city government.

The council recently voted to turn the old Food 'N Fuel gas station into a remodeled city hall.

"That's exactly the purpose is it helps revitalize our downtown and we want to pay heritage to that little block we have that's our main street," Harrisburg Mayor Julie Burke-Bowen said.

The estimated cost of the project is $325,000, which is a big difference from a brand new $3 million city hall that had been on the table before.

"Which is literally a 90 percent savings of what we would have spent on a brand new building," Burke-Bowen said.

Burke-Bowen says the new city hall will be bigger to accommodate the growing staff for the growing city. And on that staff will be a new city administrator, which the council voted to add just this week.

"This will be the person to bring everything together and be kind of the one central hub of all the spokes of the wheel," Burke-Bowen said.

Burke-Bowen says one of the jobs of the new city administrator will be to help bring new businesses to a town that has seen so much residential growth.

"Right now we have several different points of contact and it's hard to get that communication flowing and it's hard to keep the deals moving, so the city administrator will help in that respect," Burke-Bowen said.

And with a new person to handle the day-to-day tasks of Harrisburg, and a new city hall to work in, Burke-Bowen believes Harrisburg can continue to build for the future.

"And so that's going to take us to the next step of being a more vibrant and innovative city," Burke-Bowen said.

City employees are scheduled to move into the remodeled city hall by June 1.
