Harrisburg Family Safe After Overnight Fire

Harrisburg Family Safe After Overnight Fire
HARRISBURG, SD -

One person was sent to the hospital after a fire burned through a Harrisburg home early Wednesday morning.

Crews got the call around 2:30 a.m. with reports of heavy smoke coming from garage and roof of the home on the 400 block of Prairie Street.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage and spread to the attic. Officials say while there was heavy damage to the garage, the main part of the home only suffered minor damage.

It's also National Fire Prevention week and fire officials want to make sure everyone knows what to do if anything like this ever happens to you.

“Do an evacuation plan. Get together with your family members and always have two ways out. Kinda like the kids practice in schools, fire drills and stuff like that. Check your smoke detectors, make sure they're operating, change batteries in them,” Harrisburg Fire Chief Bill Fink said.

The family was home at the time but was outside when crews arrived. One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but fire officials at the scene say he should be ok. A cat and a dog were also rescued.

Around 30 firefighters from Harrisburg, Tea, and Sioux Falls responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
