Hail Damage Makes For Long Lines At Body Shops

Hail Damage Makes For Long Lines At Body Shops
RAPID CITY, SD -

It's been busy at Roy's Westside Body Shop in Rapid City.  Thanks to a late-summer hail storm or two, business is booming.

"There are some vehicles that were on the outer edges that don't have quite the severity of damage at this point, but most of the vehicles that were in the damage zone itself have some pretty heavy damage," Roy's Westside Body Shop's manager Brian Cavanaugh said.

The damage has been enough to total some cars.  For those who saw the storms that's not a surprise.

"We could see it hailing outside and it came from one direction, hailed, then the wind switched and it came right over top of us again," Rapid City resident Barb Wright-Pigman said.

Because of the sheer volume of vehicles that were damaged, just getting into a shop for an estimate can take awhile.

"We try to write one every half-hour, or so.  We have two estimators going here everyday, so we're seeing 20 to 25 vehicles a day just for estimates.  Those are scheduled out two to three weeks just to receive a damage estimate for the insurance company," Cavanaugh said.

Getting your car repaired will take even longer.

"It's tough to put a date on it now, but it's definitely in the future and it's probably further than we can see at this point.  So it's coming, but patience is the key at this point," Cavanaugh said.

"Yeah that would be fine.  It's still drivable; it just doesn't look as nice as it did before," Wright-Pigman said.

Cavanaugh said that in all his years at the shop, he has never seen this much hail damage in one summer.
