Guthmiller Back In Aberdeen After Record Breaking Flight
ABERDEEN, SD -

The youngest person to fly solo around the world is back at home in Aberdeen.

Nineteen-year-old Matthew Guthmiller broke the world record in about a month and a half when he landed in California last week. He flew to Aberdeen Friday.

"It's very good to have him back home," mother Shirley Guthmiller said.

He took off from the Aberdeen Regional Airport at the beginning of June. At that point family and friends watched him set out on a journey to circle the world. Now they want to know how it went.

"I want to hear all the stories that he has to tell. I'm sure there's a lot more than what he posted on his website," father Allen Guthmiller said.

Both Allen and Shirley Guthmiller say they're very proud of and happy for their son.

"Oh yeah, I am. He's doing what he's always wanted to do," Allen Guthmiller said.

Allen saw him Friday for the first time since he took off from Aberdeen.  Shirley saw Matthew briefly when he made his world record landing in California.

"When he landed I said 'What would you like to eat?' He goes 'Mom, I want you to take me out for a hamburger, French fries and a chocolate malt,' so that's what we did," Shirley Guthmiller said.

The Guthmillers are thankful to have their son home safe. His mom says she did a lot of praying while he was gone.

"There were so many people that actually helped him. I really appreciate all the people that showed such kindness," Shirley Guthmiller said.

Guthmiller won't have too much time to enjoy home. He leaves Sunday for an event in Wisconsin, but he will be around Aberdeen throughout the summer.
