On Monday, crews broke ground on Fire Station 11, the newest station located in the northwestern portion on Sioux Falls. The Fire Department has had its eyes on this rapidly growing area for a long time and now a new station is officially going up.
"It's exciting for the Department in the city, but for the city in itself it's exciting because we know that it means there is growth in our community," Jeff Helm with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue said.
This is the newest fire station since 2009. With the quickly expanding northwestern area of Sioux Falls, the Fire Department knew it needed to expand as well.
"Obviously they have a lot of future commercial plans out there as well as residential, so it'll meet all those needs," Helm said.
The Department says its goal is to get to calls in about five minutes or less.
In the expanding northwestern side, the department says, response times from its nearest station, at the intersection of Kiwanis and Madison, was taking a little longer.
"We need a station in that area. The growth is expanding so we want to make sure we meet all our response times that everyone expects in our community so we get on scene in a quick manner," Helm said.
As for homeowners in the area, they are relieved.
"It'll be like 5 minute or less, it'll be a lot better," said Jason Weeks.
With the ever growing city of Sioux Falls, the Fire Department says it continues to look to the next fire station location. Soon fire station 11 may not be the newest station for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.
"We plan ahead so we have a plan for fire station 12. Tentatively scheduled to be out in the southeast corner of the city," Helm said.
With the new station the Fire Department will hire 15 more firefighters. The station is expected to be open in spring of 2015.
