Youth Sports Complex Funding Gaining Ground

August 23, 2012, 7:04 AM by Austin Hoffman

Youth Sports Complex Funding Gaining Ground
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's a project that's been in the works for quite some time and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer and closer.  The Sanford Youth Sports Complex is aimed at giving your children a venue like none other.  And it's located in northern Sioux Falls, right near the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

The fields held the first youth football games last weekend.  And other organizations are near their fundraising goals to be a part of the complex.  Both the Sioux Falls Tennis Association and the South Dakota Junior Football League are raising money to finish what they started.

"It's very exciting," South Dakota Junior Football League President Larry Leveranz said.

South Dakota Junior Football League President Larry Leveranz, who had a ribbon cutting at the complex Wednesday, says they started working with the city on the project in 2006.  But it's been in the works for much longer.

"It was probably 15 years ago that we realized we were going to need an additional facility some place because of the growth of South Dakota Junior Football," Leveranz said.

The league still has to raise money to light four of the nine fields but Leveranz says it's something they will get done. The Sioux Falls Tennis Association is also working on getting $3 million dollars raised for an indoor tennis complex.

"We're about $750,000 away from our $3 million goal," Bill Townsend said.

Townsend says there are some great outdoor tennis courts in Sioux Falls but that resources are very limited for the long winter months.  That's why they're looking forward to the indoor facility.

"We have a lot of people working really hard, going out to spread the word on what this will do for our community and our kids and all the way up to the high schools and colleges, anybody that wants to pick up and learn the game of tennis," Townsend said.

Both groups say they're very excited to be a part of the new complex and look forward to seeing it completed.  The football association will also have big kick off party at the complex on Saturday.
