Grocery Store App

December 15, 2011, 9:50 PM by Angela Kennecke

Grocery Store App
SIOUX FALLS, SD - You're wandering through the grocery store looking for an obscure item for a new recipe and getting frustrated because you can't find it.  Well, now there's an app for that.

There's the list, the coupons and specials and then finding it all; they're challenges for shoppers in the grocery store. Now they can have all of it in one place: on their iPhone.

"To just make it easier and always have it there and expect to find the items where it says they are. It will just change how things happen," Melinda Haensel of Hy-Vee said.

The new Hy-Vee app means no matter what Hy-Vee store you're in, you'll be able to find the item.

"It's customized by store location. You can pick your home store you like to go to or if you're visiting in a different location you can type in that store and it will product locate by voice.  You can type it in or you can talk to it and it will walk you right to the aisle it’s in," Haensel said.

"The idea of being able to find the map and finding things because when you're on the opposite side of town and you're not used to that Hy-Vee and you don't know how to find anything, it's frustrating, especially at the holiday season with the stores being as busy as they are you want to get in and get out. Having something that makes that possible is something I can see myself using, definitely," customer Sarah Snyders said.

Besides finding items, you'll be able to choose recipes that will automatically add ingredients to your list and immediately see weekly and daily specials.

"Incorporating the sales is really good too because it saves time; looking through the ads, through aisles is nice to have it on your phone and grab it and go," Snyders said.

And special orders just got easier too.

"You actually, also, can order cakes. You can do that sitting at your kid's event or at lunch. It makes it easier. You have all those items right at your finger tips from your phone," Haensel said.

But in a grocery store that's based its marketing campaign on friendly smiles, does this app for the iPhone eliminate that personal touch?

"We'll still have all the same friendly smiles in the aisles. It just makes it easier for people to get in the right location," Haensel said.

Right now the Hy-Vee shopping app is only available on the iPhone, but it will be available for Droids in about three weeks.
