Greenway Looks To Help Vikings Right The Ship

Greenway Looks To Help Vikings Right The Ship

The Minnesota Vikings wrapped up off-season workouts last Thursday, hosting the final day of mandatory minicamp.  The team will report to training camp July 24th, and Vikings veteran Chad Greenway is eager to help Minnesota right the ship.

A playoff team in 2012, the Minnesota Vikings stumbled to a mark of 5-10-1 last season, finishing last in the NFC North.  Minnesota suffered four losses in the final seconds, and surrendered a double-digit lead in the closing quarter of its tie.  Crunch the numbers, and the Vikings could contend sooner than later.

"You're never very far away in the NFL with the talent level being so close on each team.  So, it's just about being good in critical situations.  Obviously, new scheme, new coach on both sides of the ball.  I think it's going to be all good changes for us," Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway said.

Mt. Vernon native Chad Greenway is an eight-year veteran, and adjusting to life with first-year head coach Mike Zimmer.

"You have a track record like he has across the league, you're doing something right.  So, just blessed to be able to work with him," Greenway said.

Zimmer has been preaching competition at every position, including linebacker.  A veteran outside linebacker, Greenway has led the Vikings in tackles six consecutive seasons, but spent much of OTA's working at middle linebacker.  Ultimately, only one thing matters to Greenway.

"Reality is I just want to win.  So, if we're winning it doesn't really matter, as long as we're doing things the right way and getting W's.  It doesn't really matter, one way or the other, what effects my game or my stats or anything like that.  It's just about going out and doing the job, and hopefully get some wins," Greenway said.

On the offensive side of the ball, Zimmer says he won't choose a starting quarterback until training camp, but Greenway has been impressed with the play of rookie Teddy Bridgewater.

"Teddy's a great kid.  He's quiet, unassuming.  He just wants to learn and play.  He made some unbelievable throws.  He's got a ton of ability," Greenway said.

As for Greenway, the 31-year-old is proud of what he's accomplished, so far.

"When this whole thing started, you hope this is the career you could end up having.  Just try to work for it everyday, and the reality is, you don't know if that's going to be the case or not.  You never take anything for granted, and hopefully it'll work out," Greenway said.

Greenway, who's played in 116 consecutive games, hopes to play another three seasons in the NFL.
