Governor Expected To Propose Modest Spending Boost

Governor Expected To Propose Modest Spending Boost
PIERRE, SD -

South Dakota legislative leaders say they expect Gov. Dennis Daugaard will propose a state budget with only modest increases in spending on education, health care and other top priorities.

The Republican governor will give a speech to a joint session of the Legislature on Tuesday to unveil his proposed state budget for the year beginning next July 1.

House Democratic Leader Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton says schools and health care providers need more money than the state has been providing in recent years.

Senate Republican Leader Tim Rave of Baltic says he expects the governor to propose a conservative spending plan because of sluggish tax receipts. But Rave notes that the governor and the Legislature will also decide how to spend extra money from unexpectedly large receipts of unclaimed property.
