Girl Identified In Fatal Mitchell Crash

March 25, 2012, 4:28 PM by Jon Berg

Girl Identified In Fatal Mitchell Crash
MITCHELL, SD -

It's a sad night in the city of Mitchell, as the community mourns the loss of a 9 year old girl, a local father is charged with driving drunk, running from police and causing the crash that killed her.

The Highway Patrol says Michael Sedlmeier was speeding, and refused to stop for police when he ran a stop sign and crashed into the SUV carrying 9-year-old Iszabella Morgan.

Friends tell us Morgan was spending the afternoon with a friend and her family.

Morgan was thrown from the SUV, and everyone else in the SUV suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, including a 8 month old baby.

A day after the crash, the scene is cleaned up and flowers are placed at the bottom of the stop sign where police say 46 year old Michael Sedlmeier failed to stop.

It happened at the intersection of Duff Street and 1st Avenue.

Sedlemeier faces several charges including vehicular homicide and his third DUI.

Sunday, shocked community members brought flowers to show their support for the family of the little girl whose friends called her "Bella."

"The pain in your heart is so hard at this time and what they're feeling right now. And as a community, we're all thinking and our hearts and our prayers are going out to them at this time," JoAnne Bier said.

"Words can't express it. I can't imagine what they're going through and I'm so sorry for your loss," Jasmyn Lang said.

Everyone else who was in the SUV is expected to be okay.

Michael Sedlmeier, who is charged in the crash, received minor injuries.  Police say he tried to run from the crash scene but didn't get far.
