Gilbertson Gets New Term As SD Supreme Court Chief
David Gilbertson

The South Dakota Supreme Court has elected David Gilbertson to an unprecedented fourth term as chief justice of the state's highest court.

Gilbertson says several factors weighed in his decision to seek another four-year term. He says he wants to sayto oversee the implementation of many changes that have just begun.

The 63-year-old chief justice says the court system is working to carry out a new state law that treats more nonviolent offenders outside prison walls. He says the court system has been working for years to expand special courts for drug and alcohol offenders, allow cameras in courtrooms and get more lawyers into rural areas.

Gilbertson says he doesn't have any new goals or new plans off the top of his head, but he says anything can happen.

The other four justices elected Gilbertson as chief justice. He was first appointed to the high court in 1995.
