Sioux Falls' new George McGovern Middle School is still in the construction phase, but it is starting to look like a real school.
We took a tour of the building today to check in on the progress.
The school year is just beginning, but construction on a new middle school in town is getting closer to ending.
The George McGovern Middle School will be a brand new building, but it's being modeled after a school already in use.
"This is a reuse of the plans for Memorial Middle School," Construction Supervisor, Darrel Jones said.
While they did use many of the same design elements as Memorial, this new building will have some unique features, like a separate auditorium for student performances or meetings.
"This is the proscenium opening, it will be slope seating. With handicap seating up on the top. And we'll have enough room for about 350 to 360 seats in here," Jones said.
Another exciting feature for kids will be the large gymnasium, where about 300 people can enjoy plenty of sporting events.
"They'll have a main court running this direction. There'll be hoops on each end of that. Then there'll be two small courts that run the opposite direction, so there will be two hoops on each side. So it will be a total of six just in this gym," Jones said.
And besides the fun stuff, there will be tight security systems in place to keep the kids and staff safe.
"When someone comes into the lobby, they'll walk up to a camera with a push button. They'll push that and notify the staff in the office that someone is outside. They'll be able to see who it is on a monitor. They'll push a button and that will unlock a door to allow people to come into the office. Everyone will have to access the office, they won't be able to get into the school otherwise," Jones said.
Construction should be done by June of 2014. The new middle school will be open for the Fall of 2014 school year.
