A historical society in Geddes, S.D., is trying to raise money to restore the circa-1870s childhood home of former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Peter Norbeck.
Norbeck's home remains on display in Geddes, but time has taken a toll. Residents are fighting to preserve the two-story wood house as a testament to Norbeck's life.
Sharon Ackley is treasurer of the Charles Mix County Historical Restoration Society. She says the deterioration has been gradual.
The historical society has raised about $2,000 of the estimated $40,000 restoration cost. The members plan fundraisers and are seeking grants and donations.
The home is in Geddes' Historic Village, having been moved from his family's homestead in 1989. Because the home is in bad shape, visitors can't go inside.
