GBK: Warriors Off To 8-0 Start

GBK: Warriors Off To 8-0 Start
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Warrior girls entered as the preseason favorite in 'AA'. Through their first eight games they have proven everyone right by going undefeated, but they are just starting to heat up.

The Warriors are 8-0 and flying high in class ‘AA’ girl’s basketball defeating their opponents by 35 points per contest. Through their first eight games they have knocked off four South Dakota teams, but it's the four out of state teams they believe help them the most.

"It's nice to play other teams, to get out and not just play the Sioux Falls teams. It helps us work on different areas of our game. Some games we have to have good shooters and some games we have to pound it inside. It's nice to see different teams from different areas," Washington Senior Guard Ellie Benson said.

The orange and black attack is led in scoring by Ellie Benson, Kelsey Knecht, and Hannah Nieman whom each average double figures. However it is Benson's court vision that has accounted for a third of her teams assists.

"Ellie is a great player for us. She is a hard worker and she has great instincts out there on the offense and defensive end. She is a kid that is able to make plays and has certainly done that a lot for us over the last four years," Washington Head Coach Nate Malchow said.

"As a point guard you want to push it as much as you can. I love my wings and my post players that get out and run for me. Especially when teams are tired it's nice to have that part of our game when we can run on them," Benson said.

The Warriors have sprinted through the first month of the season and the scary thing is they hope to only get better.

"We know that we have to continue to get better and our schedule will only get tougher in January and February. That will help us prepare for March, district, and state time. You have to be playing your best basketball at that time. We are no different than any other team in the state that has that goal, but as simple as it sounds that is what you are working towards," Malchow said.

The warriors will look for win number nine this Friday when they travel to take on Sioux City West.
