They started 6-3 and it looked like "AA" was a two horse race. That is until the Lady Knights handed Mitchell their first loss then swept all three Sioux Falls squads including top ranked Washington.
The latest polls were released today and Mitchell took over the top spot leaving the only team to beat both them and second ranked Washington in third. However that is only motivating the Lady Knights to continue their six game winning streak.
"It fells pretty good, people are finally seeing us as the team we need to be. It feels good knocking off those teams," O'Gorman Junior Jessica Mieras said.
"We know that we beat them and we know that we can compete with them. We are happy being ranked third and we keep moving up. It's a good felling knowing that we beat them though," O'Gorman Junior Dalee Stene said.
Much like their state champion volleyball team the O-G basketball team is led by Peyton Bjorkman, Dalee Stene, and future Jackrabbit Jessica Mieras who all average over 10 points per contest. It's this depth that has helped them climb the rankings late in the year.
"It's nice to know that we can have any five girls out there and still have a good night and not one person has to carry us each night. It is nice knowing that we have that depth," Mieras said.
"It is a really solid basketball team. Everybody has to buy into what their role is and we have a group that gets along well. I think they understand big picture. With our success this past week and a half we also know we have to continue to improve," O'Gorman Girls Head Coach Kent Kolsrud said.
They have now opened the eyes of the top two teams in the state and proven they will be a force to recon with in the post season. They just hope they can keep it rolling until then.
"We have a lot of momentum right now and we're rolling, and having a lot of fun playing basketball. We just hope to keep it going," Mieras said.
"We need to bring great effort and great energy. We need to play the best we can and whatever happens happens," Kolsrud said.
The Lady Knights will look for their seventh win in a row as they travel to take on Pierre Thursday night.
