The average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.53, down slightly from last week. But according to AAA South Dakota, that's still two cents more than one month ago.
Fourteen states, including South Dakota, have a lower statewide gas price average. Montana is at $3.29 per gallon. Two states have price averages above $4: California at $4.05 and Hawaii at $4.29.
“Motorists nationwide have enjoyed lower year-over-year pump prices now for 81 consecutive days, but that could all change before the week is through,” spokeswoman for AAA South Dakota Marilyn Buskohl said. “Although today’s average across the country is a fraction of a cent less than on this same date last year, that difference is the smallest since mid-January.”
Retail gasoline prices in 36 states have moved higher over the last week led by increases gas production issues. A number of Texas refineries have also been offline, including Valero’s refinery in Sunray, Alon’s refinery in Big Springs and Phillips 66’s refinery in Old Ocean. They’re down as planned or unplanned maintenance is performed, fueled by the switchover to production of cleaner-burning summer gasoline blends.
