A Sioux Falls church gave away thousands of dollars worth of free gasoline vouchers to anyone who attended their service Easter Sunday.
The line for free gas quickly forms at New Life Church. After two Easter Sunday services, hundreds of green envelopes containing $10 gas vouchers are handed out - no questions asked.
"Like I say, I am overwhelmed. People came and the line was long. People were excited," New Life Church’s Lavar McBeth said.
With gas teetering near $4 a gallon, organizers say Easter is the perfect time to help ease the pain at the pump.
"Even some members at our church can't afford gas. So we felt like God led us to be a blessing to those who can't afford gas. So we came together with a great idea to give back to the community by giving them gas," McBeth said.
Members of the church raised $3,500 to give away today in gas vouchers.
"It helped a lot, you know what I'm saying. It would help a lot for everybody," Mark Craig said.
"Gas is very expensive so this is really helpful having something extra," Gina Severtson said.
"That little bit, it still helps. It really helps a whole lot. Mainly for a struggling mother and grandmother like me, it really helps," Denise Kornegay said.
And while attendance at the church was higher than normal because of the giveaway, there are still several gas vouchers left over. Organizers say they will give them to anyone in need, all they have to do is ask.
This isn't the first time New Life Church has given away free gas. Last year, they gave away fuel at a Sioux Falls gas station. The overwhelming response brought stalled traffic in the area.
