Former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart, who had served as manager for ex-U.S. Sen. George McGovern's failed 1972 presidential campaign, will speak at his friend's funeral.
McGovern family spokesman Steve Hildebrand tells The Associated Press that while Hart isn't on the official program, he will speak at the Friday event at the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls.
Hart, of Colorado, and McGovern grew close in the 1960s. McGovern named Hart campaign manager for the battle he waged to defeat incumbent President Richard Nixon, who won in a landslide. Soon after, Nixon resigned in disgrace amid the Watergate scandal.
After McGovern's Sunday death in hospice care, Hart wrote in a column that America lost when they chose Nixon. But he said that McGovern and his supporters "helped save the Democratic party."
