Fulfilling Your New Year's Resolution

January 1, 2013, 6:06 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Fulfilling Your New Year's Resolution
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Many people make New Year's resolutions but most of fail to keep them. In fact, studies show that less than one in ten people will successfully reach their resolution.

The first of the year always brings more people to the gym. Getting into shape is one of the top resolutions.

"Gets crazy right after the year and then it dies off," Melissa Hofmeyer said.

So, how do you make sure you stick to your goal? You might need to research your resolution.

"Sometimes we try to make drastic changes. We try to say, 'I'm never going to eat this,' or, 'I'm going to exercise every day.' When we try that all or nothing approach, it kind of sets us up for failure," Sanford Healthy Lifestyle Coach Shelly Hoefs said.

Hoefs says instead, you should look at making a small, specific change.

"Today I'm going to eat a serving of vegetables. Today I'm going to walk a little farther or longer," Hoefs said.

But what if you fail to reach your daily goal this first week or month? Hoefs says instead of focusing on the day you don't reach your goal, focus on all the positive changes you've made.

"When we focus on the positives we find that hope, that desire to do more, that we are doing good things for us. When we focus on the negative, it tends to stop us in our tracks because we come up with the excuses," Hoefs said.

Also, Hoefs says to be patient and persistent because it takes time to change a habit. Hofmeyer got into her habit of working out a few years ago.

"You just have to keep at it. It's how you feel after you get done. It's a natural high. Always remember what you feel like," Hofmeyer said.

And that will lead to a feeling of success after fulfilling a resolution.

Hoefs also says to make sure your goal is measurable so you can see if you're reaching your resolution.
