Since 1988, the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department has been putting on Frosty Frolics, an event all about winter sports. It goes on all across Sioux Falls from Falls Park to Great Bear and beyond. Saturday is the biggest day for city officials.
“We'll have 12 hours of activities going on all across the city. You would have a hard time saying you can't find something to do and everything is free except for the $5 tubing at Great Bear,” Recreation Program Coordinator Jean Pearson said.
There will be fishing, guided snowshoe tours, cross-country skiing, skating, a curling demonstration and more.
The last couple of winters were a little mild, so some events couldn't go on. A few years ago, some ice rinks had to close and a lack of snow caused the snowshoe tour and cross-country skiing to cancel. However, this year the Parks Department says it doesn't have that problem.
“We're happy for the cold temps, maybe some people aren't. For us to put on Frosty Frolics, we need cold weather to do the activities that we want to do,” Pearson said.
If you do come to this weekend's event, you have to be extra careful and dress properly for the cold weather. The department reminds everyone to zip up and wear hats and gloves.
“We're always encouraging parents if they are dropping off kids, make sure that they have hats and coats and they have them out and they are zipped up, but our staff is pretty good at reminding kids,” Pearson said.
All the ice rinks have warming centers that will be open if you or your children get too cold this weekend.
