Frosty Frolics Opening Hampered By Weather

January 11, 2013, 9:47 PM by Kelly Bartnick

Frosty Frolics Opening Hampered By Weather
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The snow flew almost everywhere but Sioux Falls on Friday, getting the city's Frosty Frolics weekend off to a lukewarm start.

“We're trying not to call it slushy frolics tonight, but it is going to be a great weekend,” Sioux Falls City Council Chair Michelle Erpenbach said as she opened up the weekend.

“You never know what to expect but people are kind of in the winter mode, so this little rain won't dampen spirits at all,” Great Bear Recreation Park Director Dan Grider said.

Great Bear in Sioux Falls is where Frosty Frolics kicked off. There was more snow than last year, even if the warm temperatures had folks worried.

“This began as a really small event 24 or 25 years ago and now it's grown into some exciting new things,” Erpenbach said.

Fireworks lit up the ski slopes during the opening event. There were dozens of events planned all weekend long throughout Sioux Falls as part of the parks department winter weekend.

“We've got plenty of snow out here. I think they took care of the ice rinks in town so the ice should be good. It's a little slushy, but it'll be a Frosty Frolics by the end of the weekend,” Grider said.

There are several new events planned this year also, according to the Frosty Frolics Schedule.

You can also watch the fireworks show.
