Friday Morning Winter Olympics Update

Friday Morning Winter Olympics Update
SOCHI, RUSSIA -

Coach: Vetter To Start Olympic Opener For U.S. Women:

Jesse Vetter will start in goal for the U.S. women's hockey team when it opens the Olympics against Finland on Saturday.

U.S. coach Katey Stone made the announcement on Friday after the team's final practice before the Sochi Games begin.

Vetter was a three-time NCAA champion at Wisconsin and the winner of the 2009 Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top player in women's college hockey. She went 3-1 with the U.S. Olympic team that won a silver medal in Vancouver in 2010.

Backups Brianne McLaughlin and Molly Schaus were also on the U.S. team four years ago.

American Freestyler Out With Broken Leg:

American Heidi Kloser had to pull out of the Olympics after injuring her right leg during a training run before moguls qualifying.

Kloser tore knee ligaments and broke her femur following a crash Thursday night, only moments before she was supposed to head to the starting gate.

Kloser's father, Mike, posting on his Facebook page, said Heidi asked him if he still considered her an Olympian even though she didn't make it to the starting line in her first games.

"We said, of course she is," Mike Kloser wrote.

The 21-year-old Kloser was fourth in the World Cup standings coming into the Olympics.

Wagner, Marlie To Skate U.S. Team Short Programs:

World champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White will compete in the short dance team competition Saturday at the Sochi Olympics.

Ashley Wagner will skate in the women's short program for a U.S. team that's in seventh place.

Davis and White won the silver medal at the Vancouver Games and are two-time world champions. They are the Americans' best hope for a figure skating medal in Sochi.

Wagner barely made the U.S. team, selected ahead of Mirai Nagasu despite finishing behind Nagasu at last month's national championships. She is a two-time U.S. champ.

After the two short programs, five of the 10 teams advance to the free skate. The Americans are tied for fifth but seventh on tiebreakers.

After the cutdown, the pairs free skate is held Saturday night. The team competition ends Monday.
