For the last 13 years, Prairie View Prevention has been hosting a back to school fair. For the past few years they have been handing out free socks and underwear to any kid going back to class. It's a simple product that could mean the world to a kid going back to school.
Socks and underwear are overflowing in bins at Prairie View Prevention. For months, the people at Prairie View have been preparing for the Celebrate Families Back-To-School fair.
"This is my favorite day of the year, this is better than Christmas," Executive Director Darcy Jensen said.
This Saturday, hundreds of socks and packs of underwear will be going home with a kid that is excited to go back to school.
"We are open to any child who can hear us, that's who can get free socks and underwear," Jensen said. "Whether its parents needing to know bus routes or information about health checks, whether it's kids needing to understand safety, we will have a fire house there, rural metro will be there, we'll have law enforcement there," Jensen said.
Along with face painting, a free lunch and health screening, the socks and underwear giveaway is what draws most families to the event. Jensen says the new socks and underwear can help kids feel better about themselves when they walk into a brand new classroom this fall.
"Often times family's budgets are stretched way too thin and getting those new socks and underwear might not be on the list of things to do. We want to help kids have that opportunity," Jensen said.
The event is at the Washington Pavilion on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Every kid must be with a parent or guardian to get the free socks and underwear. To donate, visit any Sioux falls Lewis Drug Store location.
