Faulkton Elementary in Faulkton, Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary in Mitchell, St. Joseph School in Pierre and Harvey Dunn Elementary in Sioux Falls have received the 2013 Blue Ribbon School award from the U.S. Department of Education.
At Harvey Dunn Elementary, blue ribbons lines the halls just days after being named a 2013 Blue Ribbon School.
"It's a big honor to be a teacher at Harvey Dunn and to be part of the award and to be recognized nationally for what we do everyday," fifth grade teacher Carly Swedeen said.
The award is given to a handful of schools across the country for their excellence in education.
"The staff at Harvey Dunn is just an excellent group of people and they care, every single person cares about the children and their academic, social and emotional growth," Harvey Dunn Elementary Principal Teresa Boysen said.
Swedeen has been a teacher at Harvey Dunn for the last four years. Her class was watching as the announcement was made on Monday.
"We were all cheering and excited and I think teaching fifth grade, the students understood what that meant and I think they are all proud to be students here and just kind of recognize that," Swedeen said.
Harvey Dunn Elementary says this award is something that will stick with them for years to come.
"That national recognition from both our South Dakota State Education Department and the national Education Department is just an honor for Harvey Dunn and the Sioux Falls School District," Boysen said.
A total of 286 public and private schools across the country were awarded this honor.
