Former Teacher Admits To Sex With Student

Former Teacher Admits To Sex With Student
Kyle Keegan

RAPID CITY, SD -

A former New Underwood teacher admits to having sex with a 15-year-old female student.

The admission was part of a plea deal that 26-year old Kyle Keegan reached with the state.  But regardless of the plea agreement, the former teacher still faces a possible prison sentence.

Tuesday afternoon, Keegan walked into the Pennington County Courthouse and admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Keegan pleaded guilty to the offense of having sexual contact with a child under the age of 16 and agreed to pay restitution in the case.  As part of a plea agreement, a fourth degree rape charge was dismissed.

After pleading guilty, the former teacher told Judge Janine Kern that he had sexual intercourse with the girl on October 6, 2011, less than a week before he was arrested for the offense.

The 26 year old had just been hired on at the New Underwood School District at the beginning of the school year.  He was working as a high school social studies teacher and guidance counselor at the time of his arrest.

He's since been fired.

Keegan is set to be back in court in early March for sentencing.

Sexual contact with a minor under the age of 16 is a class 3 felony, punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
