Former NSU Basketball Coach Don Meyer Dies

ABERDEEN, SD -

Former Northern State University basketball coach Don Meyer has died.

His family says Meyer died just before 7 a.m. Sunday.  His wife, Carmen, says the coach is now running in heaven.

Doctors diagnosed Meyer with cancer in 2008 after a serious car crash in Faulk County.

Meyer was in Avera St. Luke's Hospital for three days with a feeding tube before returning home under hospice care, Brenda Dreyer of Avera said on Tuesday.

Meyer's family said that his health has been drastically declining over the past several months.

"As a family, we are so proud of his perseverance, faith, and strength," family members said in a written statement earlier in the week.

Meyer retired from coaching in 2010 with 923 career wins.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A service will be held in Aberdeen at the Northern State University Barnett Center. The family will send out an announcement once details are set.

People can also go to www.coachmeyertribute.com for updates, to give gifts, and post memories.
