A former Ellsworth Air Force Base commander has been nominated to become a brigadier general.
President Barack Obama selected Col. Mark Weatherington as one of the colonels ready for promotion. The nominations must be approved by the Senate.
Weatherington in 2011 was named commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth, the home to the Air Force's largest B-1 combat wing with 28 aircraft and more than 4,300 military and civilian members.
He left Ellsworth in April to become the military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense at the Pentagon in Washington.
Col. Kevin Kennedy now commands the 28th Bomb Wing.
