Football Fever In Doland
November 12, 2004, 4:47 PM
It's the hottest ticket in town for people in one northeast South Dakota community. Their team made its first ever appearance at the state football championships today. The excitement has left Doland a ghost town while family and friends cheer on the Doland-Conde Chargers in Vermillion.
Businesses are closed and grain elevators are barely moving during the busiest time of the harvest season. Tyler Remily's brother Grant is a starting linebacker for the Chargers, but Tyler was left behind to take care of the family business.
Tyler Remily, remained home for work, said, "Ya I got stuck, I had to stay home and check cattle and make sure they were all in and do chores and all that."
Remily worked hard to get his chores done so he could watch the start of the game.
About this time in the story I would usually try and find somebody to interview about the football team, but there really isn't anybody left in town, so I thought I would ask Sadie (dog) a few questions about her thoughts on the team.
Most of the people that are left behind are out of state pheasant hunters. The few residents left are sure to be glued to the TV.
Remily said, "Oh, it's just been unbelievable, my parents, especially my Dad, he's just nervous as heck, my brother is too."
A spirit of champions in a town that has a lot to cheer about. The other half of the School co-op, Conde, was just as empty as Doland. By the way the final score of the game, Doland-Conde lost to Avon by a score of 36 to 20.
