Focusing On Small Business

Focusing On Small Business

This week is National Small Business Week. The goal is to encourage consumers to give a local businesses a try and of course here on Phillips Avenue there are plenty to choose from.

As part of National Small Business Week, U.S. Small Business Administration wants to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, from across the state.

"We have been having coffee together for a long time and we like to try different things and move around and mostly eat local," Sioux Falls resident, Karen Gage said.

Karen Gage says she's a big supporter of shopping local businesses because it's all about the experience.

To be able to walk and down the street to see the sculptures that are on the streets and to look in the windows when you go to the mall you don't get that because then you are indoors. Downtown is more entertainment shopping. It's just so important to support locally owned and operated businesses. It keeps the community vibrant and it keeps money in the community," Gage said.

"Buying unique items and going to unique places, it's all about having a great experience, not so much about what you bring home," Sioux Falls resident, Susie South said.

Susie South is a small business owner, she owns a winery north of Sioux Falls. She says in order to be successful as a small business it's about going back to the basics and providing great customer service.

"Be hospitable so when someone opens their door greet them and make eye contact and show them that you are really happy that they have visited your place," South said.
Lot 20-29 recently opened their doors and so far they have been very successful."

Couldn't have asked for a better first week. We have had people come in within the week still and it's their first time and they don't know about us which is great to see our doors are open for returning customers and customers around the area," Manager of Lot 20-29, Brynn Joki said.

Brynn Joki expects their success will continue into the summer as residents and visitors take a trip downtown to enjoy outdoors along with all the other unique shops and restaurants.
