As word of the flu virus continues to spread, more people are rushing to get vaccinated.
It was a busy weekend for the pharmacy department at the 41st Street and Minnesota Lewis Drug in Sioux Falls.
"We have seen quite a push in the immunization rates, so we acquired some more vaccines. So, we've done probably over 1,000 doses this weekend," Bill Ladwig with Lewis Drug Pharmacy said.
With this recent surge for shots, the store is starting to run low on supplies. They have about 700 to 800 doses left and after those are gone they won't be receiving anymore this season. But that doesn't mean you should give up on getting your shot.
"We're almost out. The hospitals can still acquire some yet and they're still working on it. So, it's one of those things to be proactive. It's one of those things where it's good to be immunized," Ladwig said.
Mickey Norlin stopped by to get her shot on Monday. Being a former Registered Nurse, she says she understands the importance of getting shots like these.
"I do things like this because I think it's important that people don't catch these diseases and don't pass them on," Norlin said.
If you haven't gotten your shot, you still have time to stay healthy.
"The best you can do is try to keep healthy by limiting your exposure. But then also the vaccination piece is critical in this," Ladwig said.
As of Monday afternoon, Avera Hospital says it still has vaccines available to the public. And because of the demand, Sanford says they have shifted some supplies of the vaccine around, but they are expecting a large shipment of more some time this week.
