At this week's KELOLAND-TV and Lewis Drug Flu Shot Clinic you'll have three vaccine options to choose from: the mist, shot, or high dose vaccine.
Gone are the days when you just have one option for the flu vaccine, but with three choices at this year's clinic, which one do you choose?
First, only those who are 65-years-old or older will be offered the new, high-dose vaccine.
"The older you are the less able you are to respond to the flu vaccine, so the thought process is if we give more of the product in the vaccine, you may get a better response," Lewis Drug Pharmacy Director Bill Ladwig said.
Ladwig says the high-dose vaccine has four times the amount of antigen, which creates a stronger immune response for better protection.
"There's no reason for a healthy individual to get a high-dose because their body is already able to get the immune response they need. More isn't always better. You have to get the level where it's effective," Ladwig said.
Healthy, younger people can either get the flu shot or mist. The mist at this year's clinic protects you from four different strains of the flu virus. It's for non-pregnant people ages two to 49.
"First it was used for people who didn't want to get an injection. Now it's the accepted standard because if you want a quadrivalent, it's an easy way to do that," Ladwig said.
Finally, the standard flu shot at this year's clinic protects you against three strains of the virus. It's recommended for people six-months and older and costs $10 less than the mist and $27 less than the high-dose vaccine. You'll pay $30, unless you have a Medicare card. Then it's free.
Whichever option you choose, Ladwig says make sure you take steps to protect yourself against the flu.
The KELOLAND-TV and Lewis Drug Flu Shot Clinic is Thursday at all Sioux Falls Lewis Drug Locations.
