Flu Shot Benefits Expecting Women, Babies

October 10, 2011, 5:12 PM by Casey Wonnenberg

Flu Shot Benefits Expecting Women, Babies
SIOUX FALLS, SD - There's even more evidence this flu season that pregnant women should roll up their sleeves.

A new study by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and colleagues shows that babies born to mothers who received the flu vaccine while pregnant are nearly 50 percent less likely to be hospitalized for the flu. And that's not all.

Dr. Kristi Hermanson at Sanford Women's Health says pregnant women themselves are more likely to be hospitalized or die from the flu if they get it. Infants are also at high risk.

"If a baby gets the flu, they get a lot more sick than a two or three year old or an adult because they're so susceptible to the flu. That's why vaccinating the mom before delivery can really help protect the baby," Hermanson said.

Hermanson says research also shows flu shots are safe for a pregnant woman and that you cannot get the flu from a flu shot.
