Flooding Changes Boyden's Anniversary Plans

June 27, 2014, 5:20 PM by Leland Steva

Flooding Changes Boyden's Anniversary Plans
BOYDEN, IA -

Flooding has claimed basements in another KELOLAND community. The heavy rain started in Boyden, Iowa yesterday. By 6:30 p.m., rain gauges read anywhere from six to ten inches.

"I was sitting here watching TV and it was, you just couldn't see past our front yard it was raining so hard," Austin Roemeling said.

The rain was fast and heavy in Boyden, and the intensity lasted for hours.

It quickly turned into a nightmare for Billie Miller and a lot of her neighbors.

"I saw it go past the trees that's over by the highways and I thought 'Wow, ok it'll be alright.' Well then it got to our brown shed that's back there. Then over the garden and it just inched closer," Billie Miller.

The rain poured into Miller's basement. At its worst, more than seven feet of water filled her home. Today, her friends and family were helping clean up as the homeowner who also dealt with flooding in 2010 tries to figure out the next step.

"We're not sure what we're going to do. If we're going to redo it or if we're going to think of something else to do with it. We're not sure at this point," Miller said.

The City is also making decisions. This field near Centennial Park was supposed to host a concert to kick off the community's 125 year anniversary celebration. As soon as the rain started falling, Mayor Tim Lammers knew he'd have to go to plan b.

"Erecting three big tents and put a couple semis underneath the tent for a stage, and we're going to improvise a little bit but I'm sure it'll be a good time and everybody will have fun," Tim Lammers said.

Aside from the new location, everything else is scheduled to run on time. Lammers hopes the festivities will help bring a community together after a difficult night.

The City office has buckets and cleaning supplies for free.

They were donated by Rock Rapids and Rock Valley after they recently dealt with flash flooding.
