Flood Damage Around Canton Forces School Bus Route Adjustments

Flood Damage Around Canton Forces School Bus Route Adjustments
CANTON, SD -

Crews in Lincoln County still have a long road ahead of them after the June flooding.

The county has started repairing and replacing the roads and bridges Mother Nature swept away. But County Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman says it's going to take over a year to finish all the work.

All of that road damage could force Canton school buses to adjust some routes.  Friday is the first full day of classes for Canton students.

Superintendent Terry Gerber says the school bus director in Canton drove around the area surveying the roads. He says the buses are planning on taking some alternative routes to pick up students this year.

However, parents shouldn't be worried. Gerber says the times that students have been picked up in the past shouldn't drastically change.

Gerber says that June rain and flooding didn't do much damage to the schools. There was some leaks and damaged tiles after the rain, but after slight repairs, school is ready to go.  Gerber says the schools are very lucky to have missed the severe flood damage.
