Flood App Features 'I'm Safe' Button

March 19, 2014, 5:56 PM by Matt Holsen

Flood App Features 'I'm Safe' Button

A new Flood app from the American Red Cross could help save lives. From ways to prepare for flooding to alerts and recovery information, it's a one-stop shop.

Flooding can happen at anytime and anywhere, which is why the Red Cross wants to make sure you're prepared. Its new free Flood app gives you instant access to tips and local information.

"It tells you how to set up a preparedness kit, what you need. For example, three days of water for each family member," American Red Cross Sioux Falls Chapter Executive Tony Burke said.

While the app has plenty of information to help you prepare for a disaster, it has tools during a disaster like a strobe light and an alarm.

Burke says the app was also built with social media in mind. It has a feature that allows you to immediately connect to contacts, as well as your Facebook and Twitter accounts during emergencies.

"Simply turn your phone on, hit the 'I'm safe button,' it will go out to your social media. Everybody will know that you're safe," Burke said.

The Flood app is part of the American Red Cross' mission to provide support before, during and after disasters.

"We're really powering people up to take action now with these types of things. We're in the communities a lot more doing outreach, for example, home visits to talk about preparedness. We know, up front, if we do all of this, they're going to be better off when a disaster does strike. The long term recovery process will be a lot shorter," Burke said.

The Flood app uses real-time alerts from NOAA. It's free and available on Apple and Android devices.
