Flags To Be Lowered For Fallen Firefighters

PIERRE, SD -
Governor Dennis Daugaard has asked that all flags in the state be lowered to half-staff Sunday to honor two firefighters killed in a recent fire near Britton.
William Waldner and Jacob Waldner were on top of a large coal bin at the Sunset Hutterite Colony on September 15 when there was an explosion. That blew off the roof and a wall from the building, which landed on top of them. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
"It was a tragedy to lose these two young, brave firefighters,'' the Governor said in a statement. "My deepest sympathies go out to their families and all others who knew and loved them."
Sunday is also the date of the annual South Dakota Firefighters Association's Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Pierre. The governor asks all South Dakotans to remember those who have died while serving the public.
