Firework Sales Boom After Last Year's Drought

June 29, 2013, 10:00 PM by Stephanie Gregory

Firework Sales Boom After Last Year's Drought
TEA, SD -

This time of year everyone has a favorite firework, but after burn bans fell across parts of western KELOLAND last year some fireworks shows were a flop. This year it is a different story with the rainy weather we've seen.

Pyro-Holic's Paula Kontz says so far sales this year has been good and she expects that best has yet to come. "I think with the 4th falling on a Thursday, the Friday after is going to be a good selling day for us also," Kontz said.

As customers walk through the doors at Pyro-Holic, their wallets are opening up when they find the perfect fireworks for their celebration.

Josh Ihnen of Sioux Falls shops around for the best deals.

"It only comes once a year, so it is like Christmas, my Christmas," Ihnen said.

As Ihnen looks at the fireworks selection, he says even with the soil wet from rain this year it is still important to stay safe.

"Fire is still a hazard and anything can catch on fire. You should probably water around before you shoot fireworks, just in case," Ihnen said.

Logan Wright and his dad also walk the halls looking for fireworks to set off. With last year’s drought behind us, Logan says he is ready to light up the sky this Fourth of July.

"I'm going to hang out with family and friends and just going to have fun. Yeah, that is my favorite part of the 4th of July," Wright said.

Last 4th of July, officials in Minnehaha County asked people not to use fireworks but did not enact a full burn ban.
