Sioux Falls Fire Rescue crews are on the scene of an apartment fire south of 41st Street near Western Avenue.
Crews contained the fire to the lower level of a two-level apartment building at 3505 S. West Avenue.
Fire officials say the family that lives in the apartment was home at the time and that the man who lives there tried to battle the flames himself. He called 911 when he realized he could not put out the fire on his own.
A resident who lives on the second floor says the neighbor below her knocked on her door this morning and told her she needed to get out because there was a fire. Everyone was able to get out safely.
The lower-level apartment has extensive fire damage; the rest of the building has smoke damage.
The Red Cross is on the scene assisting people who lived in the building.
The cause of the fire has not been released. We have a news crew on the scene to bring you the latest on KELOLAND This Morning.
