Finding Similar Summers

July 29, 2014, 6:30 PM by Scot Mundt

Finding Similar Summers

July will be like June and finish as another below average month for temperatures in Sioux Falls.  But unlike June, the rain was well below average.  Looking back since 1990, I found two years that had similar summer temperatures to this year; they are 2009 and 1993.

Both years had an average high of 80 degrees in July, much like what we are experiencing this July.  This past June, Sioux Falls average high was 78, while in 2009 it was 76 and 1993 was 75; all three were below average.

The following August in 2009 gave Sioux Falls an average high of 79 , which is three degrees below the monthly average while August of 1993 had an average high of 82, which is equal to the climate average.

According to history, there is some hope of getting out of the cooler pattern next month.  We'll have an August outlook later in the week.
