Two people are dead and a child is in the hospital after a fiery crash south of Mitchell.
The head-on-collision with a mini-van and pickup happened before 4:30 p.m. about four miles south of Mitchell on Highway 37. The van, a 2006 Saturn Relay, was driving south and drifted into the northbound lane. It collided with a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup that was going north. Both drivers died at the crash and neither were wearing seatbelts.
The vehicles were barely recognizable and almost completely charred.
"It's never good to have anyone die on our roads in South Dakota," Trooper Micheal Peterson with South Dakota Highway Patrol said.
Authorities say the child is about three or four. Witnesses pulled the child from the burning Saturn Relay. Peterson did not confirm the child's gender, but said the child was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital.
Authorities are still trying to figure out if alcohol or high speeds played a role in the crash.
"There's not a whole lot of tire marks that was pre-impact to the crash," Peterson said.
