FEMA Rolling Out New Floodplain Maps For SD County
June 13, 2010, 7:47 PM
RAPID CITY, SD - Some Pennington County residents who haven't been considered in the floodplain could soon find themselves on Federal Emergency Management Agency maps.
FEMA is rolling out preliminary flood maps and some communities that aren't in the floodplain will soon be included in the updated maps.
The agency has been modernizing and digitizing some decades-old maps. FEMA's Matt Buddie says the agency used to do it on a community-wide basis but it's now moving to a countywide basis, so all the counties will essentially have the same map date.
Properties included in the flood maps that that have a federally backed mortgage would be required to purchase flood insurance.
