Fellow Farmers Helping Out Greenways

June 12, 2012, 11:15 PM by Matt Holsen

Fellow Farmers Helping Out Greenways
MT. VERNON, SD -

A group of South Dakota farmers is banding together to help one of their own. Mt. Vernon native Alan Greenway, father of Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway, is battling a serious illness, preventing him from working on his nearly 300 acres of land, but that work is still getting done thanks to friends and neighbors.

Normally you would find the Greenways here this time of year baling hay on nearly 300 acres of land. Instead friends like Chuck Storm are getting the job done. Once the people of Mt. Vernon realized the Greenways needed some help, they rushed in without hesitation.

"This is what we do. This has been done before and we do it. We do it for him, we'd do it for anybody and he'd do it for us," Storm said.

While it may seem routine, the gesture won't be forgotten by Alan's family. Chad has been in town spending time on the farm and he's grateful for what men like Storm are doing.

"Basically all of our neighbors and family have come out to support our family. It's not uncommon in small farming communities for this to happen. Our family is going through some health issues and our neighbors are being very selfless in helping us get our work done. We can't thank our neighbors and friends enough for coming over and helping us and they've been there through this whole process over the last month," Chad said.

Listening to Storm talk about the logistics of what's being done, you can tell how big of an impact the Greenways have had in this part of South Dakota.

"We had six guys with haybines cutting the hay yesterday and then there was probably that many raking today and there's six balers out here right now baling the hay," Storm said.

Thankfully, that kind of help allows everyone to focus on bigger things.

"Right now it's just an important time to be together and realize what's important. Obviously I can help out on the farm but it's more about being around and spending as much time as I can," Chad Greenway said.

Due to his father's illness Chad Greenway is not expected to attend this weekend Hyvee Sanford Legends event.
