Feeding South Dakota Praises McGovern’s Efforts

October 19, 2012, 4:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Feeding South Dakota Praises McGovern’s Efforts
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The shelves of Feeding South Dakota are covered with food that could be the next meal for area families struggling to make ends meet.

"The need is definitely significant, both here and across the country,"  Kerri DeGraff of Feeding South Dakota said.

That need is one George McGovern recognized and he's spent much of his time in recent years raising awareness about the issue.  McGovern especially wanted to see hunger end among children.

"In the end, it helps us all work towards our goal of eliminating hunger and just creating awareness about the issue so we can address that issue and hopefully meet the needs that we see," DeGraff said.

Those at Feeding South Dakota say there is no doubt that McGovern has inspired donations of food not only here in KELOLAND, but also all around the world.

"Having someone who has the ability to gain publicity, talk about an issue and have others listen is so significant for our organization because if you have someone who is passionate about your work and they're able to be visible to so many individuals, it helps us get our message out," DeGraff said.

And for many, that message has been met with action.  That's why those at this organization say McGovern has forever made the world a better place.

McGovern went to great lengths to raise awareness about the world's hungry children.  For his 88th birthday, he went sky diving in Florida.  When he turned 89, he drove a sprint car at Huset's Speedway.  He turned all of the attention at those events to the cause.
