Federal Agencies Help With Flood Prevention Efforts

June 19, 2014, 2:42 PM

NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD -

The US Geological Survey installed a rapid deployable stream gauge in Sioux City, IA. The gauge will transmit real time stream data to the National Weather Service to assist flood stage forecasts.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is assisting South Dakota and Iowa officials to provide technical assistance.

They will be helping with the Big Sioux River levee being installed Thursday. The Army Corps of Engineers will ensure culverts have been plugged to lower the risk of backwater flooding.

A 16-inch pump has been provided to Akron, IA. 10,000 sandbags were also delivered to Hawarden, IA.

In Akron, the Big Sioux River reached a record flood stage of 25.59 feet on Thursday.

Teams of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will monitor Federally-constructed levees this weekend.

A liaison from the Omaha District of the Army Corps of Engineers will be working within the State of South Dakota’s Emergency Operations Center in Pierre.
