Farm Bureau: Average Picnic Costs $5.87 Per Person

Farm Bureau: Average Picnic Costs $5.87 Per Person
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Grills are firing up across KELOLAND at the moment for Fourth of July cookouts. And you may have noticed it costs a little more to stock up this holiday.

The American Farm Bureau Federation surveyed 25 states and found the average cost of an Independence Day picnic is $5.87. The Bureau's informal survey saw a 5-percent increase over the same meal last July 4th.

“Retail meat prices are higher compared to a year ago because the nation’s cattle herd is now at a historically small level,” John Anderson, chief economist for the Farm Bureau, said. “The total number of hogs farmers across the nation are raising is also down, which has contributed to higher retail prices for pork products.”

AFBF includes the following foods as a summer picnic menu for ten people:

  • 8 1-pound hot dogs and buns

  • 8 1/4-pound hamburgers (2 pounds pre-cooked weight), buns with cheese slices

  • 4 pounds of pork ribs

  • Ketchup and mustard

  • 3 pounds of deli potato salid

  • 1 3/4 pounds of baked beans

  • 15 ounces of corn chips

  • 2 quarts of lemonade

  • 2 quarts of chocolate milk

  • 4 pounds of watermelon
