Farm Bill Headed To US Senate

Farm Bill Headed To US Senate
Sen. Al Franken

The Federal Farm Bill is making its way to the US Senate floor.

The bill, passed every five years, funds a number of programs concerning farmers, crop production, food aid, and energy conservation.

The 2012 version expands the safety net for crop insurance to help protect farmers.

Minnesota Senator Al Franken introduced legislation that would reauthorize a provision known as Rural Energy for America Program or REAP, which cuts energy costs for farmers and rural businesses. He says it's a bill that needs to be passed to help not only farmers, but everyone in the country.

"I think it's a bill that promotes healthy food, and it's just absolutely necessary that we remain a leader in the world," Senator Al Franken said.

Franken says the bill includes provisions to help get younger farmers and veterans into the farming business.
